Pre-Trip Truck Inspection Checklist

Complete DOT-compliant 10-point walkaround inspection to ensure vehicle safety and regulatory compliance before each trip.

Point 1: Engine Compartment Check

  • Open hood and secure with prop rod or hood support.
  • Check engine oil level using dipstick - should be between MIN and MAX marks.
  • Verify coolant level in radiator (when cool) and overflow reservoir.
  • Inspect power steering fluid reservoir - check level and look for leaks.
  • Check windshield washer fluid level and top off if needed.
  • Examine all belts for cracks, fraying, or excessive wear.
  • Inspect hoses for bulges, cracks, leaks, or loose clamps.
  • Look for any signs of fluid leaks on engine or ground below.

Point 2: Cab/Driver Area Inspection

  • Enter cab and adjust seat and mirrors for proper visibility.
  • Start engine and check all gauges for proper readings.
  • Verify warning lights illuminate during bulb check, then turn off.
  • Test horn for proper operation - must be audible from 200 feet.
  • Check windshield and windows for cracks, chips, or obstructions.
  • Test windshield wipers and washers for proper operation.
  • Verify seat belts are present, properly mounted, and functional.
  • Confirm emergency equipment present: fire extinguisher (charged), warning triangles (3), spare fuses.
  • Check that required documents are on board (registration, insurance, permits).

Point 3: Front of Vehicle

  • Test headlights on both low and high beam settings.
  • Verify left and right turn signals flash properly.
  • Test four-way hazard flashers for synchronized operation.
  • Check clearance lights and reflectors for damage or dirt.
  • Ensure license plate is clean, visible, and properly secured.
  • Inspect front tires for proper inflation (use tire gauge).
  • Check steer tire tread depth - minimum 4/32" required.

Point 4: Left Side of Vehicle

  • Check fuel tank(s) for secure mounting and proper cap seal.
  • Look for fuel leaks at tank, lines, or connections.
  • Inspect drive tires for proper inflation and even wear.
  • Verify drive tire tread depth - minimum 2/32" required.
  • Check all wheels for cracks, bent rims, or missing parts.
  • Ensure all lug nuts are present, tight, and show no rust trails.
  • Inspect mud flaps for presence and proper mounting.
  • Check side marker lights and reflectors for operation.

Point 5: Rear of Vehicle

  • Test brake lights by having assistant press brake pedal.
  • Verify tail lights illuminate with headlights on.
  • Check left and right rear turn signals for proper operation.
  • Test reverse lights (if equipped) when transmission in reverse.
  • Inspect rear reflectors and conspicuity tape for visibility.
  • Check cargo doors for secure latching and proper seals.
  • Verify rear license plate is clean and illuminated.
  • Ensure DOT numbers and company markings are visible.

Point 6: Right Side of Vehicle

  • Inspect exhaust system for secure mounting and leaks.
  • Check that exhaust exits beyond cab or to the side.
  • Verify no exhaust leaks under cab or sleeper berth.
  • Inspect right side tires for inflation and tread depth.
  • Check wheels and lug nuts on right side.
  • Verify splash guards/mud flaps are present if required.
  • Inspect frame and cross members for cracks or damage.

Point 7: Tractor-Trailer Connection

  • Check fifth wheel for proper engagement - no gaps between plates.
  • Verify kingpin is locked with visual inspection of locking jaws.
  • Test fifth wheel by gently pulling tractor forward with trailer brakes locked.
  • Ensure air lines are properly connected to glad hands.
  • Check that air lines have no damage, kinks, or audible leaks.
  • Verify electrical cord is firmly connected and secured.
  • Confirm safety chains are connected if using converter dolly.
  • Check that fifth wheel is properly greased and pivot plate is secure.

Point 8: Trailer Inspection

  • Verify landing gear is fully raised and handle secured.
  • Check all trailer tires for proper inflation and tread depth (2/32" minimum).
  • Inspect trailer wheels and lug nuts for security.
  • Verify cargo is properly distributed and secured.
  • Check load securement devices (straps, chains, binders) meet requirements.
  • Ensure cargo doors are latched and sealed if loaded.
  • Verify trailer lights synchronize with tractor controls.
  • Check trailer registration and inspection stickers are current.

Point 9: Brake System Test

  • Build air pressure to governor cut-off (120-140 psi).
  • Turn engine off and release parking brake.
  • Press and hold brake pedal - air loss should not exceed 3 psi/minute.
  • Fan brakes to reduce air pressure and test low air warning (activates before 60 psi).
  • Continue fanning brakes - spring brakes should apply between 20-45 psi.
  • Restart engine and build air pressure back to normal.
  • Test service brakes at 5 mph - vehicle should stop smoothly without pulling.
  • Test parking brake - should hold vehicle on slight grade.

Point 10: Final Walk-Around & Documentation

  • Walk completely around vehicle one more time.
  • Look under vehicle for any fresh fluid leaks or dragging parts.
  • Verify all compartment doors are closed and latched.
  • Double-check all lights are functioning properly.
  • Ensure cargo area is secure and doors are locked if required.
  • Complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) documenting any defects.
  • If defects found, report to maintenance and do not operate until repaired.
  • Sign inspection report certifying vehicle is safe for operation.
